Types of Oral Surgery

Oral surgery encompasses a number of oral issues and procedures that can affect the quality and function of your teeth and jaw.

Tooth Extraction

Tooth extractions are the most commonly performed dental surgery where your doctor removes an infected, damaged, or dying tooth.

Tooth extractions may be performed as a result of severe tooth decay, gum disease, dental trauma, or wisdom teeth complications. In other cases, teeth may be extracted to prepare for dentures or other implants.

As a rule, we do everything we can to save your natural teeth. However, this may not always be possible, and tooth extraction can improve your oral health and function.

A dental bone graft is used to restore bone loss in your jaw.

Missing or broken teeth can impact the nerve signals from your mouth and jaw to your brain, which can lead to jaw bone deterioration. Dental bone grafts can restore the volume and density of your jawbone.

In some cases, dental bone grafts are used during periodontal surgery to reduce tooth mobility and create a more solid foundation for healthy, strong teeth.

Gum disease, or periodontitis, occurs when your gums become infected. This disease can lead to permanent damage if left untreated.

Periodontal surgery uses small incisions along the gum line to cleanse tooth roots and wash away plaque and other harmful bacteria. Your gums are then repositioned and sutured back into place to prevent further damage and decay.

In cases where gums have receded, gum grafts can be used to restore the look of your smile.

Corrective jaw surgery, or orthognathic surgery, can correct bone-related irregularities in your jaw. This surgery can improve chewing function, jaw alignment, facial imbalances, and pain related to TMJ.

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) occurs when the tissue at the back of your throat blocks your airway while you sleep. This can cause snoring, headaches, fatigue, high blood pressure, and other issues.

While OSA can be treated with less invasive options, some serious cases require surgery. If you have OSA, surgery may help you sleep better and improve your health.

Root canal therapy, or endodontic therapy, can help save your natural teeth.

Root canals may be performed when your tooth’s nerves become infected. This procedure can save a tooth, remove pain, and stop infection in the tooth nerve. You can learn more about root canals on our Root Canals page.

What to Expect

Pre-Operative Care

We can complete a thorough consultation to determine the right treatment for your dental issue. This involves a full evaluation of your teeth, gums, jaw, joints, and oral health. We may use X-rays and scans to get a full picture of your dental status and tailor your treatment plan.

We’ll inform you when and where your procedure will be performed, and provide you with comprehensive pre- and post-operative care instructions to help maximize your results.

The length of your procedure will depend on your treatment plan and the severity of damage sustained in your mouth. We can discuss all of this with you before your procedure.

Following your procedure, it’s critical to follow your post-operative instructions for care. These instructions help prevent infection, bleeding, and other complications.

If you have any questions or concerns following your procedure, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
